Tips for a Thriving Indoor Garden

Just because you’re in an apartment or condo doesn’t mean you have to let your green thumb go to waste! There are ways to bring a garden indoors, so check out these tips for bringing more greenery into your home.

      Choose the right space

If you don’t have a balcony, you’ll probably want to choose a spot that gets a good amount of sun, while also remaining out of the way. You don’t want to block off a high traffic area as bumps or scrapes could do some damage to plants, but a dark corner might lack light, so you may have to consider alternate light sources if you don’t have too many options.

Find plants that work well indoors

You can increase the likelihood of a successful indoor garden by choosing plants that are predisposed to doing well indoors. Herbs can be very successful, especially if you have a corner of a kitchen counter to keep them close at hand when you need garnish for a meal. Peace lilies are visually gorgeous and also work best in partial to full shade, potentially great for a dining table centerpiece.

      Invest in Grow Lights

Depending on the needs of your plants and the space available near a window, you may have to bring in some artificial light to make sure they’re getting what they need. Grow lights can be bought attached to pots, or as movable lamps, and you have a lot of options depending on just how much light your green friends need.

      Watch your watering

Overwatering is the death knell for plants, and being indoors might change how often your plants dry out. Make sure you’re waiting for your plants to dry out before giving them a thorough watering – moving them to a sink or even the shower could be a good way to get the task done!

Use vertical shelving to get more plants in

If you don’t have a lot of floor space, build up! Get a shelving unit to dedicate to your plants and don’t be afraid to get creative with DIY ideas. Repurpose a wooden stepladder, take the doors and backing off an old cabinet, and see what old tin cans and containers could make for a repurposed vase.
